Bronx born Lisa Leone’s portrayal of the last days of hip-hop’s innocence explores a series of moments through the eyes of young artists who would go on to become the masters of the hip-hop generation. Portraits in Leone’s THEN, featuring legendary subjects including Nas, Run DMC, the Roots and Lauren Hill are on view at HVW8 Art + Design Gallery in Los Angeles through June 10.

Taiping Tianguo, A History of Possible Encounters

Four Chinese artists, all hailing from different places, contexts and lineages arrived in New York City in the late 1970′s to the early 80′s. Staying through the early 90′s Ai, Hsieh, Kwok and Wong have come to prominence in different ways as artists. Now, in an attempt to display tenuous as well as existing connections between the four, Hong Kong’s Para/Site Art Space exhibits works from Ai Weiwei, Frog King Kwok, Tehching Hsieh and Martin Wong. Taiping Tianguo, A History of Possible Encounters is on view through August 12th.

Artists Wanted congratulates Art Takes Miami Finalist Rachel Avena Brown on her group show currently up at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. Composed of works by artists from three cooperative galleries is Spaces: Antenna, The Front, Good Children Gallery inspired in part by an exhibition of the same name curated by Jennifer Licht at New York City’s MoMA in 1969. Visit the CAC New Orleans to view Rachel Avena Brown’s site-specific project through June 10th.

Hélio Oiticica | Galerie Lelong

On view for the first time in New York is Penetrables, three rarely seen works from Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica. Recognized as one of the key figures of Brazil’s vibrant avant-garde scene of the 1960′s and 70′s, the late Oiticica’s multi-sensorial installations of color can be seen at Galerie Lelong through June 16th. Stay tuned for Associate Director of Galerie Lelong, Dan Burns, on the jury panel for Artists Wanted: Self 2012 a creative competition.

Presenting abstract code and programming glitches as art since the 1990′s, street art duo JODI’s Street Digital is currently on view at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York City.

Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans are the pioneers of “net.art,” an art movement from the 90′s that explored the internet as an alternative exhibition space. Various works from 1999 to the present, including LED Puzzled (2012), Burnout (History of Car Games) (2004-2012), and SK8MONKEYS ON TWITTER (2009) can be viewed through May 20.
