Previous Exhibitions : Power of Self 2011

Thank you for participating in The Power of Self 2011. The amount of personality, skill, and creativity in the artwork we've received has been astounding and we're honored to have had your voice a part of this incredible celebration of self-portraiture.

It's been extremely difficult in determining the Grand Prize selection, but after much deliberation, our jury panel has made a decision. Without further ado, we'd like to congratulate Stephen O'Donnell as the Grand Prize Artist! We are also thrilled to announce Evangelia Marathaki as the Early Entry Award Artist, as well as the Top 100 Finalists!

The Grand Prize Artist:

Stephen O'Donnell Portland, Oregon
Ferociously funny and deftly skilled, Stephen O’Donnell paints in the French “portrait historié” tradition. This Portland-based painter takes self-reflection to a new level, searching for truth by channeling absurdity, in all of its beatific glory. In many of these works, O’Donnell playfully reverses gender; the artist portrays himself in ornate feminine finery, replete with overblown hairstyles and the all the accoutrements of exotic feathers and ribbons. Using only acrylic paints, O’Donnell creates remarkable depth and nuance in his work, embracing an old tradition while imbuing it with a fresh verve.

The Early Entry Artist:
Evangelia Marathaki Athens, Greece
In her series, “Looking for An Identity”, Evangelia Marathaki draws inspiration from the life, work and persona of Emily Dickinson. A poet of mythic status, Dickinson was a recluse, obsessed with death; Marathaki channels this persona into her drawings, with intricate patterning and architecture culled from 19th Century design, in an effort to re-imagine the poet’s world.
