Geralyn Shukwit
Brooklyn, NY

Biography:
I seek to photograph the world as it appears before me - the obvious, the hidden and all that comes into view. Raised in the Detroit area, I moved to Brooklyn in 1998 taking New York City on with a bicycle, passion and my camera. I studied photography and design at Michigan State University, SVA and worked as an assistant to Teresa Engle in the darkroom at International Center of Photography in NYC and St. Remy. Workshops with Ernesto Bazan in Cuba and Peru have helped me focus my vision while still taking it all in. My work has been shown throughout NYC, Detroit, and a very small town in Illinois. In 2001, I documented the FDNY firehouse memorials and published a book entitled, "What I Had to Do" which has raised over $30k benefiting the UFA Widows’ and Children’s Fund.
