Biography:
I am a full-time faculty member at Washburn University in Topeka, KS, where I teach all genres of photography from beginning darkroom to advanced digital to alternative processes. My work incorporates personal experiences combined with alternative photographic processes. I show regionally, nationally and internationally. My work has been published in Shots Magazine, Light Leaks, Diffusion, Visual Overture Spring 2010, Silvershotz 2010, and Art Buzz 2010.
RENEWAL TINTYPES:
Photography has always been a method to collect evidence. This seems an appropriate medium for documenting my aging process. I am contemplating losses such as independence, physical abilities, physical power, mental facilities, memory, emotional health, relationships, friends, family, parents, health, eye sight, sexuality, decaying body, dreams, hopes, disappointments.
Yet, as I say goodbye, I also say hello to a new life, and to a renewal of spirit and soul. As I age, I find it easier to look on the positive side. I feel liberated. I am enjoying the aging process. It is a time to rethink the lessons of life, but not to waste time worrying about what might have been or what comes next.
I use the tintype, an historic photographic process, to reference aging. Its mirrored surface invites the viewer to reflect upon his/her personal journey through life, and to confront aging and changes that are inevitable.
