Sturla Strand
Son, Norway

Biography:
Photography has been my greatest passion since I was 12 years old. I started out with my father’s well-used Pentax Spotmatic 1000 loaded with black and white film taking pictures of everything around me, cats, dogs, people, objects and landscapes. At this time in my life I read much about the great masters of photography in the library in Son in Norway where I have lived all my life. Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Elliott Erwitt, André Kertész, Josef Koudelka and Paul Caponigro were some of my first sources of inspiration. When I was in my late 20’s I suddenly lost much of my passion for photography, and did not take many serious photographs for more than 10 years. When I actively started using the Internet about ten years ago that renewed my interest in photography. Suddenly it was possible for me to see great photography from photographers from all over the world whenever I wanted! I thought this was great, and it gave me the drive to take photographs as often as I could. I have competed in many photography competitions, and I have also won several international competitions and got many honorable mentions. Because of this I have been published in photography magazines and books. I exhibited one of my photographs in The Art of Photography Show in San Diego in 2008 because I was one the winners in an international photography competition. I am so fortunate that I live in an area surrounded by both woods and the sea. The weather conditions are constantly changing, and this gives me much inspiration since this changes the appearance of the landscape all the time. I never leave the house without at least one camera around my neck since I do not want do miss a single opportunity to capture a great moment. I endorse the use of film based medium format cameras. I mainly photograph in black and white, but I have gradually become more interested in color photography. I both use expensive cameras and cheaper cameras. I like to keep it as simple as I can, and use only a few lenses. Simplicity and quiet poetic moments are words that describe my art. I seldom plan my photography projects in advance, they kind of just happen when I am out photographing. I hope you enjoy my photographs!
